I'm going to elementary schools this week.
Children are just reviewing previous contents of subjects last year and haven't started learning new contents yet.
I was wondering about the children's clothes.
Just like in April in Japan（New semester) when students are all excited to get ready for the new school year, everyone goes to school wearing brand new clothes and backpacks. I could easily recognize many of them because they still left the shopping tags on.
There were girls with braided hair, wearing taylor-made Senegalese clothes, brightly colored fabrics, and high heeled sandals, so on.
Students were dressed the same way that they would be for a celebration.
Children who often greeted in the neighborhood did not appear to be going to elementary schools in the morning. But they were helping at the bread shop as usual.
Whereas some of these children were barefoot and wearing tattered clothes, some of them were walking beside them, wearing well-dressed clothes.
Even though it is during school hours, I can also see children helping out their family business.
I asked my colleague , "I have seen data that Senegal has a 95% enrollment rate but a low completion rate (graduation rate)."
He said, "That's because they give up, their families are poor."
When I heard this, I honestly thought, "How is that possible?"
But in reality, there are such children right in front of me.
When I see them working hard with smiles even though they are not in school.
That reality makes me think about a lot of things.
The temperature continues to rise above 40 degrees Celsius.
Watermelon sale is going well.
There is no pattern, though.
今週から小学校へ通っています。
授業では前の学年の復習をしていて、新学年の授業はまだスタートしてません。
子供たちの服装が気になりました。
日本の4月に新学期の準備を張り切るように、どの子も新品の服やリュックなどを身につけて登校していました。
新品の札をつけっぱなしの子が多かったのですぐ分かりました。
髪を編み込んでいる女の子、飾りをつけ、色鮮やかな良い生地で仕立ててもらったオーダーのセネガル服を着ている子、かかとの高いサンダルを合わせている子など。
祝い事のときと同じような格好をしていました。
近所でよくあいさつをする子供たちは、時間になっても小学校へ行く様子がなく、いつも通りパンを売っている露店の手伝いをしていました。
その子供たちの中には素足の子やぼろぼろの服を着ている子が多く、
その脇を新品で着飾ったいかにも裕福だと分かる服装で通り過ぎて登校する子供たちがいます。
学校で授業をしている時間にもかかわらず、家の手伝いをしている子供も見かけます。
同僚に「セネガルでは、就学率（学校に通う率）が95%だけど、修了率（卒業する率）が低いっていうデータを見たけど本当？」
と聞いた時、「家が貧しくて諦めるからだよ。」と言っていました。
話を聞いた時、正直「そんな事があるのか？」と思いましたが、現実に目の前にそのような子供たちがいます。
学校に通っていなくても笑顔でせっせと働いてる姿に考えされられます。
40℃超えの日が続きます。
模様はないけど、スイカの売れ行きは好評。
