When I looked at the list of the first grade in an elementary school, the youngest was 5 years old and the oldest was 8 years old in the same room.
When I asked the tallest boy in the second grade how old he was, he told me he was 11.
In Senegal, elementary school starts in October and ends in June of the following year.
At the end of the period in June, there's a final test.
If students doesn't pass the exam, they will remain the same grade in school.
I heard that some of the students changed schools because they don't like repeat the same grade in the same school.
So it is normal to be children of different ages in the classroom in Senegal.
If students don't make good scores, they cannot move up to the higher grade, so it feels like a serious world compared to Japan.

学年の最後の6月には最終テストが行われます。
成績が基準に達しないと留年になるそうです。
中には留年をきっかけに転校する子もいると聞きました。
なので、セネガルの教室では年がバラバラな子供たちが教室にいるのが当たり前なのです。
クラスで1年間過ごして成績を残さないと、上の学年には上がれないので、日本と比べるとシビアな世界に感じます。
