Living abroad, I have to remember lots of names of people and events that are written with alphabet.
Japanese don't use alphabet very much, so it's hard for me..
The date of the 20th of November is named "Gammo," which means the birth anniversary of Mohammed who was the prophet of Islam.
In October, Senegalese gathered in the holy city of "Touba" for a holiday called "Magal Touba."
In November, Senegalese will gather in another holy city named "Tibawanne" for Gammo.
It is full of alphabet!
The number of holidays must be fewer than in Japan, but I feel like there are many holidays. I was wondering why, and now I got the reason!
It is because people take breaks even before and after holidays somehow in Senegal.
On the days of holidays or events, even elementary schools are closed because they are national events.
So I felt like I was taking a lot of holidays.
In fact, people are actually taking the day off.
Of course there are people who don't go to the holy places, but even in my neighborhood, religious songs are played loudly and there is a lot of excitement in all area of the countryside.
One day, I went to a bazaar at the American School in the capital city of Dakar.
There were stores from many countries, and I talked with Americans, Thais, Ukrainians, Belgians, and so on.
There was a booth where foreigners(other than japanese) were selling sushi.
There were ornaments and artwork made from scrap materials for sale, and it was a satisfying event to just look around.
It was really fun to be among people from different countries!
海外での生活では、とにかく横文字の人の名前や行事が多発するので、覚えるのにひと苦労します。
11月20日は「ガンモ」というイスラム教の預言者「モハメッドの生誕祭」です。
10月には「マガルトゥーバ」という祝日に聖地トゥーバにセネガル人が集いました。
今回の11月のガンモでは、もう１つの聖地ティバワンヌにセネガル人が集います。
横文字ばかりですね。
祝日の数は日本より少ないはずなのに、休みが多い気がする。
なんでかなぁと思っていましたが、その理由が分かりました！
セネガルでは祝日の前や後ろの日もなんだかんだ休みになるからです。
行事の日は、国民的行事ということで小学校も休みになってしまいます。
だから、祝日が少ないわりに多く休んでる感じがしたのです。
そして、実際に人々は休んでいるのです。
聖地に行かない人ももちろんいますが、私の近所でも宗教歌が大音量で流れていて地方各地でも盛り上がっているのです。
この間、首都ダカールにあるアメリカンスクール内でバザーが開かれてたので行ってきました。
たくさんの国からのお店があり、アメリカ人、タイ人、ウクライナ人、ベルギー人などと話しました。
日本人ではない外国の人たちが寿司を売っているブースがありました。
廃材で作った置き物やアート作品が売られていて、見ているだけで満足できるイベントでした。
いろんな国の人たちの中にまぎれてみると、楽しかった！
