The official language is French in Senegal.
All public documents are written in French.
Despite this, there are many Senegalese who cannot speak French.
Especially, most women usually speak in the local language "Wolof".
I rarely meet women who can speak French. I have a gut feeling that it is about 10% of the entire.
One fact of Senegalese culture is women are in charge of household chores.
Women who are mainly in their houses do not need to use French.
Children also speak Wolof from birth until they start going to schools.
But lessons at elementary schools are conducted in French by teachers.
In case of Japanese, for example, it is like that all subject lessons are taught in English after entering schools.
In Senegal, if children continue to go to school, they should be able to speak French.
Children who cannot or have stopped going school due to some reasons like family reasons should come to speak only Wolof.
And If they don't speak French, their job opportunities in Senegal will be limited.
Moreover, if the job is limited, it will affect their salary to be lower.
Especially in Dakar, the capital city, where French is often used, French is a must to work.
I am mainly involved in math lessons, but I sometimes observe opportunities to see French classes.

フランス語を話せなければ、セネガルでは仕事が限定されます。
そして、仕事が限定されると、お金の稼ぎに影響します。
特にフランス語をよく使う首都ダカールで働くためにはフランス語は必須なのです。
私は算数の授業をメインに関わっていますが、フランス語の授業も見る機会をつくっています。
