The New Year holidays finished and my work began from 3rd of January.
For Japanese volunteers of us, we actually use the word "activity" rather than "work".
There is no specific job that we have to do. But rather we get involved with Senegalese people and have to think about what kind of activities would improve the situation of the place, it is schools for me, and propose activities to them.
In my case, I have an objective of "How can I improve math classes at elementary schools?"
What I felt during the past six months was the difficulty of communicating.
French and Wolof are indispensable for my work.
When it was the first three months, I always felt frustrated that I could hardly speak the language. Even now, I continue to struggle with the language.

I love the color "Yellow" on a genetic level.
When one of my friend found out that I used a milk carton as a cutting board, she bought me a yellow cutting board.

正月が終わり、1月3日から仕事が始まりました。
私たち協力隊のボランティアの場合、仕事という言葉より「活動」という言葉を使います。
私たちに「しなければならない」仕事はなく、現場のセネガル人と関わってどんな活動をしたらその場の状況が改善されるのか考えて活動を提案していきます。
私の場合は、「小学校で算数の授業がどうやったら改善されるか？」という目的があって、それに合った提案をしていくのです。
半年で感じたのは、ずばり、伝えることの難しさ。
活動にはフランス語、ウォロフ語が欠かせません。
セネガルに着いたばかりの頃の7月〜9月はほとんど話すことが出来ないもどかしさを常に感じていました。
今でも、言葉との戦いは続いています。
知り合った仲間たちの写真を見返して、初心を思い出しました。
私は遺伝子レベルで黄色が好きです。
私が牛乳パックをまな板代わりに使っていたことを知った仲間が、黄色のまな板を買ってくれました。
黄色はいつも私の心を明るくします。
