Last April, I was joining a training in Nagano prefecture before being sent to Senegal as a volunteer.

I was originally scheduled to be sent to "Burkina Faso" in Africa.

Because of a terrorist attack and the security situation became worse, the country I was sent to was changed to Senegal.

That change was in late April 2018, just the same season of last year.

Last week, the training for this year's volunteers started.

Our new colleagues in Senegal have begun to the world.

I was inspired to recall my initial thoughts at that time.

This is arts and crafts situation in Senegal.

I saw that teachers drew pictures with chalk on the blackboard and students copy it and drew it so. Those are the same patterns in all arts and crafts classes I have seen so far.

Unlike Japanese blackboards, Senegalese blackboards do not have a smooth surface.

They are finely bumpy. And I have to put strong pressure to write on it. Addition to that, chalks are quite fragile, and if I put even a little force on it, it is broken right.

It takes a long time to draw a picture.

Children try to copy the teacher's drawing on the blackboard with their best efforts.

As much as possible, they copy the whole picture in the same way.

They are a bucket and a rabbit and a tree.

In this class, children become good at copying and drawing, but they do not feel fun of drawing freely like in Japan.

It is a tree, which was broken. The tree in the notebook was drawn by a child.

In the Senegal, it is clear that there is not much experience in thinking by themselves.

Drawing freely is fun, so I'm making opportunities for children to experience it.

去年の4月、協力隊として派遣される前の訓練を長野県で受けていました。

私はもともとアフリカにあるブルキナファソという国に派遣される予定でした。

テロが起きて治安が悪化したため、派遣国がセネガルに変更されたのです。

その変更が去年2018年4月後半、ちょうど今の季節でした。

先週、今年の協力隊の訓練がスタートしたようです。

新しい仲間が世界に向かって動き始めました。

私は、初心を思い出そうという気持ちになりました。

セネガルの図画工作事情。

何回か見たのは、

【黒板に先生がチョークで絵を描く。子供はそれを写して描く。】

というスタイルの授業です。

今まで見た図工は全部このパターンでした。

セネガルの黒板は、日本の黒板とは違い、表面が滑らかではありません。

細かなでこぼこがあります。

そして、かなり力を入れないと字が書けません。

チョークはかなり折れやすく、少し力を入れるとすぐにポキっと折れます。

絵を描くのにもすごい時間がかかるのです。

先生が描いた黒板の絵を、子供は一生懸命写します。

できるだけ同じように、まるまる写します。

 バケツ。うさぎ。木。

この授業では、マネして描くことは上手になりますが、

日本のように、自由に描く、という楽しさはありません。

セネガルの授業では、自分で考えるという経験値が少ないことがよく分かります。

自由に描くって楽しいことだから、体験するチャンスをつくっています。
