I like to walk every single street when I start living in new place. So I walk around many different streets every day.
In the neighborhood, there are many similar sandy roads lined with similar houses made of bricks.
It is not so common scenery in Japan, but on every single street, people from those houses often are talking in front of their houses.
When we meet, I first greet them.
Most of the time, they say, "Come here!" or "Come closer."
If they call me like that, I walk closer to them and continue talking.
They look very happy when I speak the local language Wolof they usually speak.
They smile and say, "You understand Wolof!", which makes me happy too.
By the way, when they really start talking, their talking is getting fast that I can't understand them at all.
I had a conversation with a man I met today when I was walking on the street.
I asked him, "What do you do?"
The man answered a occupation, I could not understand that word.
I can hear new words I don't know in both French and Wolof every day.
The man said, "This is the word.”
He wrote down the word's spelling on the ground by hand.
I didn't understand yet, so I took a picture of it and said to him, "I'll look it up later!"
When I looked at the photo later, it was difficult to read it!
Finally, I found out that the word was "assainissement", which meant he is a construntion worker of sewage.
Sometimes riddles like this are fun.
新しい町に暮らし始めてまだ土地勘がない時期に、ありとあらゆる道をもれなく通ることが好きです。
というわけで、毎日色んな道を歩いているのです。
私の住む地域はレンガでできた家が並ぶ一見同じに見える砂道が多いです。
日本ではあまりない光景ですが、どの道を通っても家の玄関の前でその家の人がおしゃべりしています。
目が合うと、私はまずあいさつをします。
ほとんどの場合、相手は、
「まぁ、こっちおいで！」「近くに来なさい！」
が多くて、もしそのように呼ばれたら、その人のそばに行って話を続けます。
セネガル人が話す「ウォロフ語」を私が話すと、セネガル人はすごく喜びます。
「あなた、ウォロフ語がわかるんだ！」
と笑顔になるので、こちらも嬉しくなります。
ちなみに、相手が本気で話し始めると、とんでもなく早口で全く分からなくなります。
今日出会った男の人とは、歩いていたときに話し始めました。
「何の仕事をしてますか？」
と聞くと、聞き取れない単語をその人は言いました。
フランス語もウォロフ語も、
毎日、知らない言葉がどんどん出てきます。
その人は「この単語だよ。」とアルファベットを地面に書いてくれました。
私は写真で撮って、
「後で調べるね！」
と言って別れました。
あとあと写真を見ると、解読が難しい！
やっと調べがつき、その人の職業は「assainissement（下水設備）」でした。
たまにはこういうなぞなぞもゆかい。
